The spice must flow! (But no one said anything about the plot)

Released in 1984, David Lynch's adapdation of Frank Herbert's Dune was railed by Roger Ebert as an "ugly, unstructured, pointless excursion." The film received a nearly unanimous thumbs down from every notable critic at the time, and seemingly for good rereason.

Nearly 40 years later, Denis Villeneuve tried again and split what may be the slowest sci-fi movie of all time into two parts.

It was a ballsy move that seems to have paid off as the 2021 reboot was met with largely positive reviews from fans and critics alike while following (almost verbatim) every major beat of Lynch's original flop.

We'll need to wait until 2023 to see the conclusion of Villeneuve's vision, but we may finally have the adaptation that Herbert's novel deserves.
